Awesome Bottom Fishing Action

"Sepectacular" is about the only way to sum up the recent offshore bottom fishing activity!  I've been working several live bottom areas located anywhere from 35 to 50 miles offshore and finding plenty of action with grouper, snapper, sea bass, trigger fish, and porgies.  We've even been catching a handful of cobia and king mackeral while fishing these areas.  The best news is that this fishing is only going to get better as we move into the fall months.  If you want to experience some action packed fishing and bring home some great fillets for the grill then offshore bottom fishing is for you.

Good Times on the Wrecks!!!

may_2011_016Sorry for the lapse in blog postings but I've been fishing too much to have a chance to post lately.  My clients and I have had some really fun trips over the last couple of weeks.  Our main target species has been cobia and our primary fishing location has been the offshore wrecks and artificial reefs.  The action has slowed somewhat from what we were seeing in May but we are still catching them on most trips.  We caught 5 cobia per trip on each of the last two trips with a few of the fishing pushing 50lbs.  We've also been catching some nice sea bass, red snapper and amberjacks.  I also make a Gulf Stream run last week and caught 14 dolphin, cobia, cuberra snapper, and had a sailfish on for several minutes before it threw the hook in a spectacular series of jumps.  As we move into late June and July the tarpon should begin showing up in our inshore waters and the king mackerel will become thicker on the offshore wrecks and live bottom areas.  Give me a shout if you want to get in on the fun!!  By the way..we just installed a new stereo system on Rumble Fish.  It is awesome!  Feel free to bring your IPOD along on the trip to listen to your favorite tunes while on the water!!!

Red Hot Cobia Action

rhetts cobiaThe cobia have been stacked up on the offshore wrecks and my clients and I have been having a blast sight casting and vertical jigging for them.  Pictured is Rhett Reeves, on summer break from Sewanee -University of the South, with her first cobia.  We caught four that day, all in the 35 to 45 lb range, along with a dozen or so bull redfish.  The day prior we caught eight cobia with the largest breaking the 50lb mark.  Our biggest cobia of the season has been a little over 60 lbs but have seen some over 70 lbs cruising on the surface.  Good numbers of king mackerel are also showing up on the wrecks along with plenty of spadefish and amberjack.  The dolphin bite in the gulf stream has been great over the last few weeks.  Lots of fish in the 15 to 20 lb range are being caught along with some "slammer" size dolphin in the 30 to 40 lb class.  A good number of billfish including, blues, whites, and sails, and a handful of wahoo are also making their apperance in the stream.  If you've been thinking about getting out on the water... now's the time!!!

Good Cobia Action in the Broad River

High winds kept us off the wrecks on Friday, but we were still able to bring 4 cobia to the boat while fishing the Broad River.  The weather is looking great for the next several days and the plan is to hit the offshore wrecks for some cobia, amberjack, flounder, snapper, and cudas.  I've got the kite fishing equipment on board and the winds look just right for putting some baits out under the kite.  If you've never kite fished you're missing out.  Watching a big cobia, AJ, or king mackeral take a bait suspended just at the surface of the water is an awesome site.

Cobia and Dolphin Season Is Here!

100_1397   Cobia ranging from 20 to over 70 lbs are now being caught on a daily basis both in the Broad River and Port Royal Sound and on the offshore wrecks.  The action is good for this early in the season and all signs suggest that the bite is really going to bust loose any day now.  Large schools of cobia are being reported in the nearshore waters of ports to our south and they are heading this way.  Aside from cobia we are catching some jumbo spanish mackeral around the rips and sandbars in the river.  We are also catching some really nice flounder around the offshore wrecks while targeting cobia.  The Gulf Stream waters some 70 miles off of our coast are currently teaming with dolphin, wahoo, and tuna.  Billfish including sailfish and white and blue marlin have also become more common over the last few weeks.  Bottom line...If you've been thinking about getting out on the water for red hot sportfishign action now is the time to do it!!!
